Karl Lagerfeld for Medicom
COCO CHANEL BE@RBRICK
Painted cast vinyl sculpture, 72 (H) x 35 x 25 cm, executed in 2006, numbered CHANEL No 452.Medicom BE@RBRICKs series, or Bearbricks as they’re more simply known, are collectible toys that have stood at the intersection of art, fashion and design. Since the brand’s first release in May 2001, the Japanese toy company has collaborated with artists, fashion designers, and major retailers to produce these collectible figures.
Bearbricks come in many different sizes; the most popular models are the 1000% Bearbricks-which are approximately 2.3 feet high. The shape of a Bearbrick itself never really changes. What makes these toys so coveted are commemorative and rare editions designed by high end fashion brands or revered pop artists. Originally made to benefit the Hong Kong Blood Cancer Foundation as a part of the ‘Love is Big, Love is Bearbrick’ event, the Coco Chanel Bearbrick was designed by Karl Lagerfeld in 2006/2007 and is dressed in Chanel’s signature tweed suit and pearls.
Only around 1.000 pieces were made. A rerelease is unlikely so this remains a holy grail Bearbrick for any fashion or design fan.
